Mob beats Syrian refugee caught sexually assaulting woman in Turkey

A Syrian refugee in Turkey was convicted of sexual assault, but not before getting a different kind of justice when a gang spotted him and beat him up on the street.

Omar Monda, reportedly 29, was said to have touched the 25-year-old woman inappropriately when walking by her. After she shouted, two bystanders came to her aide and attacked Monda, the UK Express reported.

Word spread throughout town. A businessman reportedly tried to help, giving Monda water, but more people reportedly joined the group exacting revenge.

Turkish media first reported the incident last week.

Images from the scene showed Monda kicked and beaten on the ground before police arrived and finally arrested him.

He was later convicted of sexual assault. The court has not yet ruled on his sentence.

Mersin, 185 miles from the Syrian border, has seen a dramatic surge in refugees. Official stats place the number at 167,000, with locals saying it could actually be more than 300,000.

This is not the first incident involving Syrian refugees and sex crimes in their host countries. Just this past New Year’s, Germany faced a wave of sexual assaults, many of which were perpetrated by men of North African and Middle-Eastern descent.
