Mexican authorities say they have captured the head of a criminal gang believed to be responsible for kidnapping more than 100 people.

A Federal Police statement alleges that 24-year-old Nicolas Trujillo Urieta led the group, which operated in the violence-plagued Tierra Caliente region of southern Mexico.

The victims were reportedly held in makeshift camps.

Friday's statement said Trujillo was detained in the town of Atotonilco el Grande, Hidalgo state. No shots were fired.
