MEXICO CITY – Mexican prosecutors say that police have arrested an alleged former top operator for the Arellano Felix drug gang.
Suspect Manuel Aguirre Galindo faces drug trafficking and criminal conspiracy.
An official of the attorney general's office who was not authorized to be quoted by name said Friday that Aguirre Galindo was arrested by federal police over the weekend in Mexico City.
The official said Aguirre Galindo is being held at a maximum security prison on Mexican charges, and that there is no current U.S. extradition request.
U.S. officials have described him as a founder of the Arellano Felix gang and the highest ranking leader who wasn't a member of the Arellano Felix family.
