Mourners are planning a private memorial service this week for three members of a family with links to Australia who were killed with an ax in a gated upscale housing estate in South Africa.

A week ago, the bodies of Martin van Breda, his wife Teresa and their eldest son Rudi were found in their home in Stellenbosch. Daughter Marli, 16, was hospitalized with an ax wound to the head, local media reported. Police would not discuss the investigation.

In an emergency telephone call, 20-year-old son Henri, who was lightly injured, said a man with an ax had attacked the family. Henri appeared to chuckle at one point in the call.
