Man charged with trying to leave Canada to join terror group

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says a Quebec man faces a charge of attempting to leave Canada to participate in the activities of an extremist group.

Corporal Camille Habel says 28-year-old Ismael Habib appeared in a Montreal courtroom Friday. He returns to court Monday.

Habib also faces a charge of giving false information in order to obtain a passport.

He was arrested following a domestic violence complaint against him in February.

Habel says a warrant had already been prepared for Habib on the extremist group allegations when he was arrested on the domestic charge.

"He was part of a greater investigation," Habel said.

She said further details on the charges would come out in court.
