Malawi president weds in colorful ceremony

LILONGWE, Malawi (AP) — Malawi's president has married a former Cabinet minister.

The archbishop who heads the Catholic church in Malawi officiated Saturday at a sports stadium in the capital. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was among the guests.

President Bingu wa Mutharika wore white from gloves to shoes, and arrived in a white limousine. Bride Callista Chapola arrived in a luxury car decorated with cloth printed for the occasion with pictures of the couple. A 100-member choir sang as she walked down the aisle.

Afterward, the couple rode through streets lined with cheering Malawians to a reception at the presidential residence.

Mutharika, who has four children, lost his first wife to cancer. Chapola, who has two children, is also widowed.
