VILNIUS, Lithuania – A Lithuanian appeals court has released an Irish citizen who was convicted of trying to purchase weapons for the Real IRA.
Michael Campbell was arrested in 2008 as part of an international sting operation, which included undercover British agents, as he tried to purchase guns and explosives in the Baltic state.
He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2011 by a lower Vilnius court.
The Vilnius Appeals Court on Wednesday cleared him of the charges and released him immediately. It was not immediately clear if prosecutors can appeal the decision.
