A Liberian police official says police have killed two inmates who broke out of prison last week and arrested 12 others in the West African nation.

State radio and regional officials say more than 60 inmates staged a jailbreak at a maximum security prison in the southeastern city of Zwedru on the border with Ivory Coast. Police, however, put the number at 21.

Police spokesman George Bardue said Tuesday the dead were among a group of escapees who seized guns from traditional hunters and opened fire on police before their arrests.

The region hosts tens of thousands of Ivorian refugees who fled from Ivory Coast's postelection violence in late 2010 and early 2011. The militiamen who broke out of jail are mostly supporters of Ivory Coast's former strongman, and the country fears cross-border attacks.
