A lawyer for Chad's former dictator Hissene Habre says they have appealed last month's decision by a special tribunal that found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture and sex crimes during his time in power.

Mounir Ballal said Saturday the appeal was submitted Friday to the Extraordinary African Chambers.

The landmark trial is the first time one country has tried the former leader of another for crimes against humanity.

Chambers spokesman Marcel Mendy said a court of appeals must now be set up, likely in August, consisting of a president who is neither Chadian or Senegalese and African Union-appointed assessors.

Mendy also said decisions on reparations for the more than 4,000 people accusing Habre are expected by July 31.
