MILAN – The Italian lawyer of a former CIA operative convicted in the kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric in Milan as part of the U.S. extraordinary renditions program has requested a pardon from Italy.
Sabrina De Sousa's Italian lawyer, Dario Bolognesi, told The Associated Press that De Sousa requested a pardon last year and he expects to meet with Interior Ministry officials this month to discuss it.
De Sousa, who was arrested last week in Portugal on a European warrant, faces a six-year sentence for her role in the 2003 kidnapping of Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr. She was among 26 Americans, mostly CIA agents, convicted in absentia of the kidnapping.
Italy has issued only one pardon in the case, for the lone military member among the defendants.
