ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey's state-run news agency says Kurdish rebels have opened fire at a tea house in southeast Turkey, killing a police officer and a civilian, an attack that comes amid renewed violence between the government and the autonomy-seeking insurgents.
Violence has flared in the past week, with Turkey launching raids against positions of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in northern Iraq and southeast Turkey, and the rebels escalating attacks against Turkey's security forces. Meanwhile, Turkey has also been cracking down on the Islamic State group.
The violence has shattered a fragile peace process with the Kurds launched in 2012.
Anadolu Agency said PKK militants opened fire on the tea house from a speeding car in Diyarbakir city late Wednesday, injuring the two who later died in hospital.
