Jordanian troops have dismantled a tent camp housing hundreds of Sudanese men, women and children. A government spokesman says about 800 will be deported to Sudan.

Spokesman Mohammed Momani says the Sudanese entered Jordan under false claims of seeking medical treatment and that "asylum conditions don't apply to them."

Before dawn Wednesday, security forces tore down the tents the Sudanese had pitched outside the U.N. refugee agency headquarters a month ago to press demands for resettlement to a third country.

Ahmed Douri, one of the displaced, says troops forced camp residents onto buses and drove them to an airport. Speaking by phone from a bus, Douri says he and the others are from the troubled Darfur region and cannot return there.

The U.N. refugee agency had no immediate comment.
