Swiss police say they are trying to reach people trapped inside a train that derailed in the central city of Lucerne, with details of any injuries still unclear.

Rail company SBB says the Milan to Basel train derailed shortly before 2 p.m. (1300 GMT; 9 a.m. EDT) Wednesday as it was pulling out of Lucerne's main train station.

It says the Trenitalia train's fourth carriage toppled over and a power line has been interrupted.

Urs Wigger, a spokesman for Lucerne police, said that rescuers can't enter the train to determine whether anyone has been injured until they're sure the severed power line is switched off.
