CAIRO – Egypt's election committee says the official results from the vote for parliament's upper house show the Muslim Brotherhood winning 58 percent of the seats up for grabs.
The commission said Sunday that the ultraconservative Al-Nour party came in second with a quarter of the seats in the upper house, known as the Shura Council. That result matches the party's surprisingly strong showing in the lower house elections.
Liberal parties came in third with a combined total of 12 percent of the seats.
The upper house has no legislative powers and enjoys only a consultative role. It has 270 seats, two-thirds of which are filled by elections and the rest are appointed.
Islamists also dominated elections for the People's Assembly, the more powerful of the two houses of parliament.
