Iraqi and Turkish officials say three Iraqi Sunni fighters were killed and four Turkish soldiers were wounded in an attack on a training camp in Iraq for fighters battling the Islamic State group.

The former governor of the northern Ninevah province, Atheel al-Nujaifi, told The Associated Press that the camp had come under mortar fire "for hours" on Wednesday and that the shelling was continuing.

A Turkish official says the attack "originated" from Islamic State-held territory. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

The official says the four wounded soldiers were evacuated to Turkey and were in "stable condition."

More than 1,000 fighters have received training at the camp.
