TEHRAN, Iran – TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has convicted and sentenced to death two suspects charged with torturing and killing three anti-government protesters in prison.
The protesters were detained in the turmoil following last June's disputed presidential election and died in Kahrizak prison the next month.
One of those who died in custody was Mohsen Rouhalamini, the son of a prominent conservative figure. Anger over the abuse eventually forced the closure of the prison.
Wednesday's announced verdicts are the first in a case that drew some of the fiercest criticism against authorities over their treatment of protesters.
The judiciary's website says the military court sentenced nine other suspects in the case to flogging or prison terms, while one person was acquitted.
