JAKARTA, Indonesia – Rescuers are searching for dozens of people missing and feared dead after a boat carrying asylum seekers sank off the coast of Indonesia's main Java island, killing at least 21 people.
Survivors say the boat was carrying about 100 people when it sank Friday.
National Search and Rescue Agency official Brig. Gen. Tatang Zainudin said Saturday that 28 people had been rescued and transported to an immigration office for identification. Three Lebanese nationals were found alive early Saturday. Rescuers pulled 21 bodies from the water on Friday afternoon, including seven children.
Zainudin said rescuers using more than a dozen boats were continuing to search for survivors. The exact number of missing is not known because no manifest exists, but at least 35 people are believed to be unaccounted for.
