India's army says it has killed four insurgents and captured another during a 12-hour clash near the disputed border with Pakistan in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir.

Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda said the arrested rebel is a Pakistani citizen. There was no independent confirmation of that.

He said the rebels hid in a cave in a forested area during the fighting, which started Wednesday and ended Thursday in the Rafiabad region.

Various rebel groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan since 1989. India accuses Pakistan of training and arming the rebels and sending them into Indian-held Kashmir for fighting, a charge Pakistan denies.

Indian forces say they have arrested two Pakistani citizens in the past month. Insurgents are rarely captured alive in Kashmir.
