ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Britain's foreign secretary says oil-producing countries of the Arab world should put their wealth toward renewable and clean energy sources ahead of next month's landmark climate change conference in Paris.
Speaking Thursday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Philip Hammond said he sees "something rather nicely symmetrical about the idea that the wealth that's been generated from years of successful exploitation of fossil fuels would be reinvested ... in the energy technologies of the futures."
Hammond also said Britain and other participants want an "ambitious" plan in the Paris talks, though he acknowledged tough negotiations were ahead.
From the Emirates, Hammond said he'd be heading to Vienna, where world powers are gathering for talks on the Syrian civil war.
