Hong Kong police say they have charged a woman accused of torturing her Indonesian maid as well two other former domestic helpers.

Police said they filed a holding charge on Wednesday consisting of two counts of wounding, one of common assault and three of criminal intimidation against 44-year-old Law Wan-tung.

Injuries suffered by the victim, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, have sparked outrage and highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by foreign domestic workers across Asia and the Middle East.

Hong Kong police said they filed charges after a "thorough and in-depth investigation" and after receiving legal advice.

Sulistyaningsih worked in Hong Kong for only eight months. She went home to Indonesia with scabs and lacerations covering her face, hands and legs and blackened skin around her feet.
