Honduran Man Behind 'Mass Killing' At His Florida Home: Killed Wife, 3 Girls And Self, Police Say

The house in a middle-class neighborhood in Fort Myers, Florida did not stand out from the rest.

"Nothing really remarkable about this home: children's pictures on the refrigerator, toys around the house, etc.," noted Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott.

On Sunday, police said they found a grizzly scene inside: Sonny Enrique Medina, a medical technician, allegedly killed his live-in girlfriend Maria Navas, their two girls and one girl from the woman’s earlier marriage. The girls’ ages ranged from 2 to 10.

Evidence pointed to a murder-suicide by Medina.

"Our deputies found a horrific and unthinkable scene here," Scott told the USA Today. "In essence, a mass killing."

The killings occurred sometime around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call from a Spanish-speaking man reporting the emergency – no word though on what was said or if the caller was Medina himself.

A neighbor from across the street, Laurie Gretten, said there appeared to be a party at the home that night and she was about to call the cops because the music was loud.

"Around 2 a.m. the music was turned up as high as it would go, and I was about to call the cops when it suddenly cut off," she told USA Today.

"The girls were very beautiful,” she added. “They were the nicest people; my husband talked to the man, they looked happy to us,” she said.

Scott confirmed there was evidence of a party at the house, with garbage cans filled with empty beer containers in front of the house.

San Pedro Sula-based La Prensa newspaper reported Tuesday that Medina worked for more than two years as a medical technician at SalusCare, a mental health and substance abuse nonprofit in Fort Myers. The paper quoted SalusCare’s vicepresident, Todd Cordisco, saying Medina helped keep patients safe and supervised their meals.

"In the most recent assessment of Medina, [he] was unconditional, he stop doing things to support others, either during his shift [or otherwise,] he would help with transportation. He was well respected and supported by peers and nurses," Cordisco said.

The remains of the family are being examined by the District 21 Medical Examiner's office. Scott confirmed that a gun was recovered at the scene.
