Oslo police are urging motorists to stay home after heavy rains and flash floods snarled road and rail traffic in the Norwegian capital.

Rains over southeastern Norway on Saturday forced authorities to close a key tunnel and highway sections to and from Oslo where cars were stuck in the water.

There were also reports of waterlogged homes and several stores in the Sandvika shopping mall east of Oslo closed after being flooded.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute recorded 33.4 millimeter (1.3 inches) of rain between 11 a.m. and noon in Oslo.

On Twitter, police warned that streams and rivers could flow out of their banks. No injuries were reported.
