British driver Lewis Hamilton's hopes of his second win in the British Grand Prix looked to have been fatally damaged on Sunday as his left rear tyre deflated in spectacular fashion.

The 28-year-old - world champion in 2008 with McLaren - was leading after starting from pole position when his tyre came apart eight laps into the 52 lap race.

Hamilton, yet to win a race for his Mercedes team on his debut season for them, managed to make it back to the pits but re-emerged in last place.
