Haitian police say a U.S. citizen kidnapped last week from his home in the capital has been freed.

Police spokesman Frantz Lerebours says the kidnappers of Frank Jean-Baptiste let him go Tuesday as officers surrounded an area in the hills above Port-au-Prince.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of $300,000 but Lerebours says no payment was made.

Jean-Baptiste was seized last week by men posing as employees of a package delivery service.

The Haitian-American is married to the director of a private school for the children of diplomats and wealthy Haitians.
