A Kenya police official says a female tourist has been shot dead in the coastal town of Mombasa, the second foreigner shot in same area this month.

Henry Ondiek, the Criminal Investigations chief in Mombasa, said Thursday two gunmen shot the woman four times at the Old Town in Mombasa where a Russian woman was killed earlier this month.

The Russian woman, two of her friends and a tour guide were confronted by three armed men on July 6.

The Kenyan coast has been hit by a wave of insecurity. Somali-based al-Shabab militants have claimed responsibility for the killing of 97 people in separate gun attacks at the coast since mid-June. Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants say they are avenging the presence of Kenya troops in Somalia to fight the militants.
