Police in northern Nigeria say unknown gunmen opened fire on construction workers, killing two before kidnapping a Lebanese employee of the firm.

Kaduna state police spokesman Aminu Lawan said Tuesday that the attack involved workers trying to build a water project in a rural village. Lawan said the gunmen shot dead a Nigerian and a Lebanese worker with Mother Cat Construction Co. in the attack Monday before abducting the other worker.

A phone number for Mother Cat could not be immediately found.

Nigeria's once-peaceful north is under increasingly bloody attacks from a radical Islamist sect. Foreign workers in the region now are kidnapping targets as well. A German kidnapped from Kano in January remains missing and al-Qaida's North African branch has claimed they now hold him hostage.
