An Iranian semi-official news agency is reporting that unknown gunmen have injured a lawmaker and a local governor after opening fire on their car and killing their driver, in the west of the country.

The Sunday report by Tasnim says pro-reform lawmaker Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh sustained minor injuries. It says the local governor of Dalahoo district and a fishery official were injured too.

Tasnim says the driver was killed, after four gunmen blocked the car and opened fire. The gunmen fled toward the Iraqi border.

The report did not identify the gunmen or give a reason for the attack.

In recent weeks, Iranian forces and Kurdish separatists have western Iran. Iran said its forces have killed dozens of insurgents in western provinces near Iraq, which have a large Kurdish minority.
