OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso – Witnesses are reporting gunfire at an army barracks in the West African nation of Burkina Faso.
The latest unrest erupted Saturday evening and continued early Sunday at the Po barracks near the Ghanaian border. The facility hosts a training center for senior officers and commanders.
The reports of shooting into the air come about a month after a mutiny had threatened President Blaise Compaore's 24-year rule. The president dissolved the government and removed the country's security chiefs but kept himself in power.
Compaore, a former army captain, came to power in a 1987 coup in which Burkina Faso's first president was killed. Compaore was re-elected in November in a vote that the opposition said was rigged.
