Authorities say police battled armed suspects at a popular mall in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, sending terrified shoppers scrambling and leaving one officer dead.

Four other people were gravely wounded in the daylight gunfight Thursday.

Julio Castaneda is the spokesman for the Attorney General of the Northern Justice Zone.

He says the gunbattle started when the suspects entered Galerias Tec around 2 p.m. and were identified by police.

There was an exchange of gunfire, and shoppers began fleeing. Some people fell to the ground as they tried to get away.

Authorities didn't release the names of the wounded or of the officer killed. They also didn't say whether the wounded were civilians or suspects.
