CONAKRY, Guinea – Officials in Guinea have finally released parliamentary election results for a hotly contested district nearly three weeks after the vote took place.
In an announcement on state radio late Thursday, election authorities said that the president's ruling party was ahead in the Matoto district, the West African country's largest.
More than 103,000 votes were cast for the ruling party, while two opposition parties took nearly 71,000 votes and more than 53,000 votes, respectively.
The delayed results from Matoto have held up announcement of preliminary national results.
The Sept. 28 elections were Guinea's first in a decade. Many fear the results will stoke divisions and re-ignite violence in the country, where clashes erupted after the 2010 presidential election.
