GUATEMALA CITY – Guatemalans angry over corruption scandals protested on the capital's main square Saturday, pressing their demands that President Otto Perez Molina resign.

People from all sectors of society in the Central American nation converged on Constitution Square carrying banners and signs denouncing the president.

In recent weeks, Guatemalan prosecutors and a U.N. commission formed to investigate corruption in the country have filed charges against dozens of people in two purported big cases of official graft.

One involved an alleged scheme of millions of dollars in bribes paid by businesses to avoid import duties. The other case involves allegations of kickbacks for overpriced contracts for the Social Security Institute.

The president hasn't been charged with any crimes, but many Guatemalans blame him for the corruption since it involves his administration.
