Greek authorities searching for a missing British tourist say they have found a severely mauled human body apparently devoured by animals in northern Greece.

Police say the body was found Saturday on a mountain near the village of Petrota, 285 kilometers (180 miles) east of Thessaloniki. Authorities found near it documents belonging to Celia Lois Hollingworth, 63, whom the British embassy in Athens had reported missing in the area on Friday.

Coroner Nikos Kifnidis says the cause of death is still unclear, as parts of the woman's body are still missing. An autopsy will be performed Wednesday.

Kifnidis told The Associated Press Tuesday the skeletal remains he saw had been stripped of their flesh.

A spokesman for Britain's Foreign Office said it is providing consular assistance to the Briton's family.
