Germany's foreign minister met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow for talks on the Ukraine crisis after the Russian president invited him to the Kremlin at the last minute before he headed back to Berlin.

The dpa news agency reported Wednesday that Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with Putin for 75 minutes late Tuesday. No details of the talks were available and the Foreign Ministry didn't immediately return calls for comment.

The meeting came after Steinmeier's scheduled talks with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, in which Steinmeier called for quickly drawing a division line between government troops and pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine to save a floundering peace deal.

At the G-20 summit in Australia earlier this week, Chancellor Angela Merkel squared off with Putin over Ukraine, accusing him of undermining peace across Europe.
