MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says there is more the United States can do to help Yemen combat the franchise of al-Qaida that has taken hold in that country.
Gates tells reporters that the U.S. and Yemen are discussing ways that Washington can provide more support. He is not specific but says the main focus will be on training of Yemeni forces.
The package bombs intercepted in Britain and Dubai 10 days ago were sent from Yemen, and the terror group al-Qaida in the Arabian peninsula has claimed responsibility.
U.S. forces already help train and equip Yemeni forces fighting the group. The U.S. is also considering increasing military aid to Yemen next year.
