A French prosecutor says a man suspected of murdering a 9-year-old girl who went missing from a wedding celebration last summer is now also suspected of murdering a soldier months before in the same eastern region.

Local prosecutor Thierry Dran told a news conference that 34-year-old suspect Nordahl Lelandais was given a preliminary murder charge Wednesday after DNA tests showed a skull found recently by a hiker was that of a soldier missing since April in the Savoie region, in the French Alps.

Lelandais denied any involvement in the disappearance or murder of Cpl. Arthur Noyer, as he did in the missing girl case, Dran said.

Lelandais has already been charged with murder in the case of Maelys, the girl who went missing in a nearby village in late August.
