The free pizza promotion at Dallas-based Pizza Patrón happened Tuesday evening amid great fanfare and opposition.

Hungry customers willing to order in Spanish, or at least say "Pizza, por favor" ("Pizza, please"), began lining up outside the restaurant on Jefferson Boulevard in Dallas as early as 4 p.m.

The giveaway lasts from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday night only at all Pizza Patrón location. However, there are no deliveries. Customers must walk into the restaurant.

When the promotion was announced last month it caused an uproar among many who felt the gimmick was discriminatory.

And in fact the manager of one restaurant in Fort Worth said someone who apparently disagrees with it handed worker a letter filled with white powder Tuesday morning. The manager took it to a police station where it was determined to be sheet rock.

Pizza Patrón also raised eyebrows a few years ago when it began accepting Mexican pesos as well as American dollars.
