Former Soviet-era dissident Vladimir Bukovsky to face UK charges of possessing indecent images

British authorities have summoned a former Soviet-era dissident to appear in court on charges of possessing and making indecent images of children.

Prosecutors said in a statement Monday that Vladimir Bukovsky will face five charges of making indecent images of children, five charges of possession of indecent images of children and one charge of possession of a prohibited image.

The 72-year-old author and activist spent 12 years in Soviet prison camps, prisons and psychiatric hospitals and wrote about his experiences. He has recently called for liberals in Russia to stand up to President Vladimir Putin and sought to ensure free and fair elections in the country.

He is set to appear in Cambridge Magistrates' Court on May 5.
