Ukraine's emergency services say a pre-dawn fire has swept through a private home for the elderly, killing 17 people and injuring five others.

No cause has yet been determined for the fire that broke out Sunday at the home for 35 residents in Litochki, a village 42 kilometers (25 miles) north of Kiev, the capital.

Photographs provided by the emergency services show that the fire gutted the two-story, yellow stucco building. Several charred satellite dishes are seen still attached to a wall.

The emergency services said in a statement that more than 150 people worked to rescue the residents and put out the fire, which began shortly before 4 a.m.

The Ukrainian government has set up a commission to investigate the circumstances of the fire.
