A fire at a hotel in Hamburg has left one man dead and several people hospitalized.

Police said they were alerted to the fire at the small hotel near the northern German city's central station early Wednesday. Emergency services rescued 10 guests but were unable to save a 32-year-old man who was staying in a third-floor room.

Six of the 10 rescued guests were admitted to hospitals for observation after inhaling smoke.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire or on the dead man's identity.
