ABUJA, Nigeria – A Nigerian opposition party has selected the governor of the northern state of Kano as its candidate for the April presidential election.
Delegates voted Saturday night to make Gov. Ibrahim Shekarau the candidate of the All Nigeria People's Party. His entry into the race marked the end of the period when political parties could select candidates.
The overwhelming favorite for the April 9 election is President Goodluck Jonathan, whose ruling People's Democratic Party has the money and muscle to dominate Nigeria's electoral system. Jonathan, a Christian from the south, faces opposition from Muslim candidates from the country's north, including former anti-corruption czar Nuhu Ribadu and former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari.
