MIAMI – A family is distraught and demands justice days after a teen was shot in the back and left for dead.
"He loved his family," said the victim's brother, Alejandro Martinez. "He's the one that brought us together. He's making us realize now that we're too late because he's not here right now."
"His heart was just a little kid," said his father, William Herrera.
On Christmas Eve, the family made a plea to the public.
He's the one that brought us together. He's making us realize now that we're too late because he's not here right now.
Brian Herrera, 16, was riding his bicycle to his friend's house on Saturday just after 11 a.m. when he was shot and killed.
"You see something like that and it does affect you," said Detective Eldys Diaz. "You try to have some professional distance but you can't see a family like that and not be hurt personally."
Police have very little information as to a description of the shooter. They do believe that Brian was an innocent victim. "At some point as a society we have to come together and say enough is enough," said Diaz. "We're not gonna take this anymore."
"Somebody has to know something," said Herrera's family member. "Somebody had to have seen something, somebody had to have heard something. Please come forward. Please say something."
The family's life has been torn apart.
"This has ruined every Christmas for us now," said Herrera's brother. "This happened to us in Christmas so we have to remember him now before Christmas. Every year before Christmas and we gotta keep on about his life every day. I just want to take him to the end, put him to rest and look forward to finding whoever did this."
Police said the public's assistance is crucial in this case.
