BEIJING – An explosion outside a school in southern China has killed at least one person and wounded many more.
Initial reports from the scene are describing the blast in the resort city of Guilin as an accident, but police have declined to confirm that.
The explosion struck about 7 a.m. Monday as children were arriving at Balijie Primary School. Photos from the scene show badly burned victims sitting dazed in the street as flames lick motorcycles around them.
A police officer at Guilin's Lingchuan county where the school is located says one fatality has been confirmed and a number of other people were injured and sent to hospitals.
The officer, who gave only her surname, Li, says police are investigating. She declined to say whether they had determined a cause.
