BAMAKO, Mali – A spokesman for Mali's former coup leader says he's leaving his military barracks to move into a private residence in Bamako.
Amadou Sanogo's spokesman said Wednesday that the one-time junta leader would be leaving the Kati barracks by the end of the week.
Since the March 2012 coup, Sanogo has been promoted to the position of four-star general in the military, making him the highest-ranking officer in the Malian army.
His spokesman, Lt. Mohamed Bou Coulibaly, says it is better for Sanogo to be in Bamako now that he is serving as a military adviser to the president.
The announcement, though, comes after serious unrest at the Kati barracks last week during which disgruntled soldiers shot an army colonel and held him hostage for hours.
