WARSAW, Poland – Poland's prime minister is meeting with a top European Union official in Brussels as part of efforts to avert potential EU sanctions over a reform of Poland's judiciary.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's office tweeted Thursday that he had handed a document detailing the changes to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The document says that Poland's judiciary is now shaped like those in some other EU members.
EU leaders argue the changes violate the principle of judicial independence and equality and they have triggered a sanctioning procedure, Article 7, that could lead to stripping Poland, one of the larger EU members, of its voting rights.
Seeking to avert the measure, the leaders are holding a series of talks.
Later Thursday, Morawiecki is to attend a conference on the EU's future.
