European Union nations have agreed on tougher real driving emissions tests for diesel cars after the Volkswagen scandal showed previous testing methods could be cheated on.

The EU Commission said Wednesday that experts from the 28 EU nations approved the more stringent methods by a "large majority." The tests will resemble real road conditions more closely.

From Sep. 1, 2017 new car models will have to pass the new emissions test before they can be put on the market.
