Officials say a suspected mass grave has been discovered in Serbia believed to contain bodies of ethnic Albanians who were killed during the 1998-99 war between Serbia and Kosovo.

The European Union Rule of Law Mission did not say in its statement Friday how many human remains were found at Rudnica quarry near Serbia's boundary with Kosovo. But it said the excavation will continue.

Serbian war crimes prosecutors have said some 250 bodies could have been secretly buried there, but none were found in previous excavation attempts.

There was no immediate comment Friday from Serbian authorities.

Some 10,000 people were killed during the conflict between Serbian security troops and Kosovo separatists, and hundreds of bodies were transferred to central Serbia to hide evidence of atrocities.

Kosovo declared independence in 2008.
