An Ethiopian maid who accused a senior U.N. diplomat in Thailand of treating her like a slave has dropped legal cases against him after reaching an out-of-court financial settlement.

The lawyer for Emebet Mono Bezabh said Tuesday she had filed lawsuits in both criminal and labor courts against Yonas Tegegn, a fellow Ethiopian who had been the World Health Organization's chief representative in Thailand.

Bezabh charged she had been beaten by the diplomat's wife, forced to sleep with the family dog and given only rice to eat, and gone virtually unpaid for the two years she worked before fleeing her employer's home in April. Tegegn denied the allegations.

Lawyer Kohnwilai Teppunkoonngam said the two sides agreed to keep the amount of Monday's settlement confidential.
