SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Prosecutors in El Salvador have charged a Spanish priest with getting imprisoned gang members transferred to less harsh prisons and helping them continue extorting people from inside their cells.
Prosecutor Elsy Amaya said Tuesday that the charges are part of a second criminal case against Roman Catholic priest Antonio Rodriguez Tercero, who was arrested last week and released on bail Monday.
Prosecutors last week charged Rodriguez Tercero with getting favorable treatment for Salvadoran gang members and smuggling contraband into prisons.
His arrest was part of a sweep that also arrested 12 police officers, two judges, three court employees and two prosecution officials who allegedly collaborated with members of "Mara" street gangs. Some of them are accused of helping expedite or fix judicial rulings for gang members.
