An Egyptian security official says a sniper using a silenced weapon has killed a soldier in the restive northern part of the Sinai Peninsula.

He says the attack took place Monday near the village of Abu Shinnar, near the city of Rafah. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to brief journalists.

On Sunday, at least 14 people, mostly policemen, were killed in separate attacks when militants struck a police station in North Sinai's provincial capital and hit a passing armored vehicle with a roadside bomb.

Northern Sinai has witnessed a series of complex attacks targeting Egyptian security forces, many of which have been claimed by a local affiliate of the Islamic State group. Twitter accounts affiliated with the group claimed responsibility for Sunday's attacks.
