NICOSIA, Cyprus – Some 250 Greek and Turkish Cypriots marched in support of an accord reunifying their ethnically divided island ahead of a summit that will likely decide whether a deal on Cyprus is possible.
Crossing the divide in the capital, Nicosia, demonstrators on Wednesday handed Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci a declaration urging him and Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades to move toward an agreement "without hesitation."
Akinci told demonstrators he's hopeful the Jan. 9-12 summit in Geneva — where the thorniest aspects of the decades-old dispute will be tackled — will be the "beginning of a new era."
He said any deal would depend on ordinary Cypriots to make it work.
Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey invaded in the wake of a coup aiming at union with Greece.
